The Great Tribulation
Understanding the prophetic period of unprecedented trouble that will come upon the earth before Christ's return, as revealed in Scripture
What Is the Great Tribulation?
A future period of unprecedented suffering and divine judgment upon the earth, lasting seven years according to biblical prophecy
"For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now— and never to be equaled again."
— Matthew 24:21
Jesus Himself described this as the most severe period of trouble in all of human history.
"He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering."
— Daniel 9:27
The final "week" of Daniel's prophecy refers to a seven-year period of tribulation.
"Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world."
— Revelation 3:10
This tribulation will affect the entire world, not just one nation or region.
"How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it."
— Jeremiah 30:7
Also called "Jacob's Trouble," emphasizing its special significance for Israel.
"After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven."
— Revelation 4:1
Revelation chapters 6-19 provide the most detailed account of tribulation events.
"Immediately after the distress of those days... they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven."
— Matthew 24:29-30
The tribulation immediately precedes Christ's second coming and millennial kingdom.
