"The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build." - Nehemiah 2:20
Nehemiah was a Jewish exile who served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes. His name means "Yahweh comforts," reflecting God's comfort and restoration through his leadership.
When he heard about Jerusalem's broken walls and burned gates, Nehemiah's heart was broken. He prayed, planned, and then acted with remarkable leadership to rebuild not just walls, but a community's hope and security.
The Burden (Chapter 1):
Heard about Jerusalem's disgrace and wept, fasted, and prayed for four months
The Permission (Chapter 2):
Asked the king for leave and resources, receiving royal letters and military escort
The Survey (Chapter 2):
Secretly inspected the walls at night before announcing the project
The Building (Chapters 3-6):
Organized the people, overcame opposition, and completed the walls in 52 days
Nehemiah's Leadership Model:
- Prayer First - Began with extended prayer and fasting
- Careful Planning - Surveyed the situation before acting
- Clear Vision - Communicated the need and God's call clearly
- Organized Action - Assigned specific tasks to specific people
- Persistent Faith - Overcame opposition through prayer and action
- Personal Example - Led by example in sacrifice and commitment
